Head In The Clouds
I’m all for moving forward with technology and having all your content in “the cloud” accessible any where you are and on any device you happen to be on, but at some point you have to ask yourself is it worth it. I say no, it isn’t and certainly not for critical tasks. I hate nothing more then be reliant on someone else for anything in life. It’s the worst feeling in the world to be let down by anyone and it’s just downright embarrassing when it happens in front of clients.
As a rule nothing I do is in the cloud. I don’t trust it because as Murphy’s Law states “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”. My luck, it always goes wrong when it matters most. For example when I’m heading into a meeting with clients, I will have anything I need right there with me on the iPad or laptop. Sure, Starbucks has internet and it’s there should I need it but I don’t bank on it. This logic is nice too because it forces me to think ahead about what is going to be discussed — or might come up — just that thinking alone can lead to a smoother meeting.
Even my own website I don’t leave to chance. I have a full page screen shot of my wedding packages page on my iPad as a jpg. If I walk into Starbucks just as some muppet is crushing the network with torrent downloads, it doesn’t matter because what I need, along with a lot of other just in case content, is already on my iPad, sans internet. I’m sure Zach made out just fine without the few images he wanted to pull off his feed, it definitely wasn’t the key section of his meeting. But, do you honestly want to be sitting on a nice comfy couch waiting to be called into an office, going over your presentation while you wait and suddenly, you can’t connect? Do you want that curve ball in your life? I don’t.
The cloud is for the lazy and the gambler.
